What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also known as BJJ, is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It teaches you how to control and submit an opponent using technique, not brute strength. Because of this, it is perfect for people of all sizes and fitness levels. In fact, many smaller athletes use BJJ to defeat much larger opponents.

BJJ is one of the core disciplines we offer at Fight City Gym. Whether you are training for self-defense, sport, or just for fitness, BJJ offers a complete system for growth.

A Short History of BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started in the early 1900s. It was developed from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. A Japanese master named Mitsuyo Maeda taught these skills to a Brazilian named Carlos Gracie. Later, Carlos and his brother Hélio Gracie adapted the techniques to suit smaller fighters.

The Gracie family focused on ground control and submissions. Over time, they developed what we now call Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This system proved to be so effective that it became one of the foundations of modern MMA. Royce Gracie’s victories in the early UFC events showed the world just how powerful BJJ can be.

Why BJJ Works

One of the reasons Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so popular is because it works in real situations. Unlike some martial arts that focus only on striking, BJJ gives you tools to defend yourself without relying on size or strength.

Here are some key ideas behind BJJ:

  • Leverage beats strength: You learn to use angles and body mechanics to your advantage.
  • Position comes first: You must control your opponent before trying to submit them.
  • Stay calm: BJJ helps you stay relaxed under pressure, which is useful both on and off the mat.

Because of these principles, BJJ is both practical and powerful.

Basic Techniques You Will Learn

If you are new to BJJ, don’t worry. At Fight City Gym, we teach you the basics step by step. Everyone starts at the beginning, and there is no rush.

Here are a few moves and positions you will practice:

1. The Guard

This is a defensive position where you use your legs to control your opponent from the bottom. It allows you to protect yourself and set up attacks.
Watch: Guard Position Basics

2. The Mount

This is a dominant position where you sit on top of your opponent’s torso. From here, you can control them and apply submissions.

3. Back Control

Taking your opponent’s back gives you control and opens the door to powerful chokes. It is one of the best positions in BJJ.

4. Submissions

You will learn how to finish a fight using techniques like the armbar, triangle choke, and rear naked choke.

5. Sweeps and Escapes

Sweeps allow you to reverse positions, while escapes help you get out of bad spots. These skills are important for self-defense.

Gi vs No-Gi Training

At Fight City Gym, you can train in both Gi and No-Gi classes.

  • Gi BJJ uses a traditional kimono and focuses on grips and control.
  • No-Gi BJJ uses a rash guard and shorts. It is faster and uses different grips.

Both styles are useful and help you build well-rounded skills. That’s why we encourage our students to train in both.

The Mental Side of BJJ

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not just about fighting. It also helps your mind. As you improve, you become more patient, focused, and confident.

Many people find that BJJ helps reduce stress and improve mood. It teaches you how to stay calm in tough situations and how to solve problems under pressure.
